42“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Matt 24:42-44
I don’t know about you, but it can sometimes be hard waiting for visitors. It can sometimes even lead to death, death by boredom, “When are they coming?”
So to pass the time, you think “no point just letting it wither away”. You do some washing and start with the dinner prep, but you get so fixated on making the best devilled sausages that you forget all about the guests and whip off to the shops to grab the ingredients. While there you see a friend and do coffee and see K-mart has 15% off, “you can’t miss that”. Meanwhile you guests sit on the front steps.
I don’t know about you but that is kinda what happens for me when I read passages like the one above. “How much longer?” I ask. But then each day the sun rises and sets and it happens all over again! So to pass the time, I want to keep busy. A little bit of sport (ha… maybe that’s just me), then there’s work, the mortgage, the holiday, the kids, school stuff and then pretty soon I have forgotten about that arrival, even that important guest’s return. Now that would be deadly.
So as we wait trusting in our saviour death who has guaranteed our future, we don’t just have to stand by the door, we can still get busy:
33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness Matt 6:33
