I guess reading a book called “Lamentations” you should expect it to be a bit depressing. But this is full-on! It makes me realise how much I take my good/easy/blessed life for granted. If God treated me as my sins deserve… it would be a completely different story! So I feel that reading Lamentations gives me a helpful, more thankful perspective on life. But also that I shouldn’t take my life for granted and should be prepared for it to go pear-shaped at any minute. As the saying goes, “faith isn’t faith until it’s all your holding on to”. Isn’t God gracious to give us the perspective that we need to have on suffering even before suffering hits! In the midst of terrible confusion and anguish, the following cry of faith is all the more startling:
Lamentations 3:21-27 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.
