1 Kings 8:1-9:9
This section begins so well. All things seem to be on the up:
10 When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the LORD. 11 And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled his temple.
God as he promised, now fills the temple, it has become his dwelling place. The plans and promises of God seemed to be coming about! Even the promise of blessing to the nations is in view:
43b so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.
Yet the section ends with an ominous warning:
‘ 6 “But if you or your sons turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name.
How will Solomon the man of wisdom go?
