Last Sunday, we heard from Amelia as she shared how God has been weaving her story. A picture of her calico square and her story are below. For more information about the calico squares and how they will be used, have a look at Stew’s Pastors’ Post here.
Stew has asked me to share my square with you and I guess a bit of the story behind it. I imagine people will come up with many different ideas and mediums in creating their square. I can’t wait to see it all come together.
So here’s my square. The black being the chaos of life, the white in the middle of it all being God, peace, his purpose and truths and promises. This is where I want to sit and rest and trust that he is weaving my story.
Life is crazy and chaotic. Filled with highs and lows, storms, turbulence and sometimes tsunamis (the black). For me those big storms have come early in life, in the form of parents divorce, depression, anxiety and the tsunami…spinal cord injury. At 16 my parents divorced, at 19 my boyfriend (now husband) broke his neck leaving him a quadriplegic. Over the resulting years I have often wondered and implored God…why?! Why has this happened? Why has SO much happened? Why us? What is your purpose in all this?
We have certainly felt the chaos. Over the years I have also come to know one thing for absolute certain. God is in control (the white)! He has a plan and a purpose in my life. He is weaving my story. I am convinced of this truth and hold on to this truth. Through all the storms, trials, tears, pain and questions, I have had to learn to sit with God, in his presence, trusting that he is good and true and trusting that his ways are better than my ways.
When Stew first mentioned this idea of God weaving our story I was intrigued. I’m a visual, crafty person and a woven tapestry makes sense to me. The under side is complete chaos, threads going everywhere, mess, it looks it can’t be anything. But you turn the tapestry around and it’s a gorgeous picture, intricate and beautiful. We see the underside of the tapestry. We may never see the upper side of the tapestry or understand how it’s all being woven together. That’s where we have to trust God. Trust that he is weaving our story. Trust that out of the chaos he has a plan and a purpose.
In my circle of white, where I want to sit, I have written verses. Verses that remind me of God, who he is and what he has promised me in this life:
From Psalm 23:4 – Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil for you are with me.
Deuteronomy 31:8 – The lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Ecclesiastes 3:11 – He has made everything beautiful in its time.
These verses from the Master Weaver himself tell me he is here, he is in control, he has a plan and a purpose for my life and I can trust him with it all. He is weaving my story.
Just to finish, I want to read you this poem from Corrie Ten Boom. She explains it so well.
My Life is but a weaving
between my Lord and me;
I cannot choose the colors
He worketh steadily.
Oft times He weaveth sorrow
And I, in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper,
And I the under side.
Not til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver’s skillful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.
He knows, He loves, He cares,
Nothing this truth can dim.
He gives His very best to those
Who leave the choice with Him.
