Hi Pete, just wondering if you think that Jesus didn’t have the Spirit before his baptism?
Good question.
I think the first thing to say is that we shouldn’t necessarily think in the same terms regarding then as now. We know that now, anyone who is in Christ is a new creation – born of the Spirit. In other words, every Christian has received the gift of the Spirit and anyone who doesn’t have the Spirit isn’t a Christian. But it’s clear that pre-Easter you could be one of God’s people without “having the Spirit” as we understand it today.
Now, as for Jesus, I think we’d have to say that there is something new going on here. My understandibg is that Jesus’ baptism is his anointing. In other words, it’s at this point that he takes on the mantle, identity and mission of the “Christ/Messiah”. I think that Jesus Spirit baptism is also related to OT fulfilment – God promised that a time would come when he would give his people a new Spirit. Jesus is the one who will baptise others with the Holy Spirit but firt he must be baptised in the Spirit himself – a sign that he is the one in whom the OT promises is fulfilled. He is God’s true Son, the firstborn of God’s new Spiritual family.
So all-in-all, I’d probably be prepared to say that Jesus didn’t have the Spirit until this point, but that for Jesus (unlike us) his relationship
with the Father wasn’t dependent on having the Spirit because he was already “in nature God”.

I had a look at Piper’s talk. He doesn’t seem to refer to the question of whether Jesus “had the Spirit” prior to his baptism in the sense that we normally think of believers having the Spirit today. Did I miss something or are you suggesting that because Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit (as clearly stated in scripture and in the historic creeds) that he therefore “had the Spirit”?

Yes Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.therefore “had the Spirit” bit hard not to after all he was called the Son of God when he was born.
I find it interesting about Simeon and the Holy Spirit. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.

Jesus was born divine. He was, and still is, both man and God. He has two distinct natures: divine and human. He did not increase in his quality of divinity when he received the Holy Spirit, nor did he reduce his divinity when he became man. by Matt Slick from article” Did Jesus become divine when he received the Holy Spirit?”
For me in the end He is my King and saviour, whether He was born with the spirit or not I know Jesus is the only saving grace in this world and nothing else satisfies me.
