“It is finished” doesn’t merely mean “this is the end”. They are words of victory, not defeat. “It is finished” means that through his death on the cross Jesus has fulfilled God’s eternal plan and achieved the mission on which he was sent. That mission was to be the full and final sacrifice for the sin of the world and open up the way back to God through repentance, forgiveness & faith. If we put our trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins, achieved for us through his death on the cross, then we are able to join in the victory cry of Jesus: “it is finished” for us as well. Jesus has dealt with our past of sin, guilt and shame; paying our debt, washing us clean, making us whole, setting us free.
