Welcome to a special Vision Sunday edition of The Pastors’ Post. Apologies for the missing edition from last Friday. There was so much going on in Food for Thought week, we ran out of time even to communicate its absence. But this Sunday 29th November, marks an important moment in the life of our church family, as Vision Sunday allows us to pause momentarily and to cast our Vision ahead to the coming year.
Vision Sunday is the fruit of a night and day in October when our elders, ‘Leadership Team’, head away to prayerfully consider the Bible teaching program for the year ahead and then on the following day to consider the next five years that, under God, we would love to see transpire in his grace.
Vision Sunday then presents the opportunity to communicate that vision with the church family as a whole. ‘The Good Life’ vision of 2020 wasn’t what we would have suspected. No one could have anticipated the challenges that have come to our world and yet I’m sure many of us would agree we have seen the good life of the Gospel in the most remarkable ways in 2020! The extraordinary reach that our Sunday scatterings had ZOOMING in to homes all over Lismore and Goonellabah, even over the states of Australia and even over the world. Or our multiplied gatherings across four locations and a host of new members of our church family serving in creative ways. Or our Celebration ‘Someday’ that saw us desperately resting in the Father’s care. And even the joy last Sunday of seeing the church family gathered again for Food for Thought Sunday, to be reminded and to invite our city to see the deep satisfaction Jesus can bring.
What does our Father God have planned across 2021? Time will tell. But the Vision across 2021 at Southern Cross Presbyterian Church is ‘Across the World, Across the Nation, Across the Road’.
We want to see Southern Cross Presbyterian Church aligned with God’s vision to have His glory and grace fill our city and our district. So we want to gather our resources and our energies and our thoughts to have a year where we focus our efforts on growing our love for the world through mission.
On Sunday we will think more practically about a few initiatives that will help us in our cause and yet in many ways it is simply just re-calibrating our efforts with God’s grand vision for the world.
Let me finish by reading this marvellous verse from the book of Habakkuk:
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge
of the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
